My name is Doug Porter. I am 47 years old and I am a Pharmacist. I also have Cystic Fibrosis. I recently retired in 2014 after working as a Community, Hospital and Locum Pharmacist for 25 years. I now live happily in Buderim with my wife and youngest daughter aged 15 with our eldest daughter who is 21 studying at University of QLD in Brisbane. Together with my wife we run our own Accounting Practice so these days I am pursuing my new dream to become an Accountant.
I have been in a phase of pre transplant assessment for the last 5 years. I am the epitomy of “never give up” and often drive my wife mad by continuing to be fairly active even though my predicted FEV1% is around 28-31% at best. These days I have become a Consumer advocate for improving the care of those people who suffer Chronic illness and work closely with many organisations within Qld Health. I currently sit on several Hospital and State level committees as a consumer representative.
When I began my “career” in Consumer engagement I had two main goals one being a safe environment for CF patients to be in Hospital with single room accommodation and the second being patient use WiFi. They are both a reality now so I’m now looking for my next project.
